"Pennsylvania Grand Canyon", Part IV, Covered Horse Drawn Wagon Ride, Oct. 17, 2018 and snow Oct 18

Dear all, when you have a chance take a nice trip to the PA Grand Canyon and a ride on the covered wagon. It was a two hour trip and very informative.

This afternoon, October 17, we went on a beautiful ride along the Pine Creek River.  The trail is part of the old Erie Railroad and a bike and hike trail.

 The man in the box, Jim, is our narrator.  He grew up in the canyon and is very knowledgeable of the history of the canyon.  Including the timber era, bears, settlers, trout, and special culture such as the timber baron's wife building churches wherever the timber crew were working.

 The church is located near the village of Ansonia.  They are looking for someone to help restore it.   It was built in the 1800's.

 Pine Creek.  Lots of fish and other critters.  Three presidents of USA fished here.  Comment if you know who they were.

We are going to go eat a nice meal in Wellsboro.The diner was in the "Timeless Destination Restaurant".  It was delicious.  Highly recommend it.

Hello, This post is about our visit to Leonard Harrison State Park, Tuesday, AM, Oct 17, 2018

LEONARD HARRISON STATE PARK (www.dcnr.pa.gov)

We woke up Tuesday morning and found a gorgeous day emerging.  Our plans to visit Leonard Harrison State Park came to fruition.

These rapids are a close up of Pine Creek at same location as the above picture, taken with my old Canon Power Shot SX 30 IS digital camera (thanks Richard for the research when I was buying a better camera)

As you enter this area you can take a detour from the top to the bottom of the gorge/canyon using Turkey Path.  It is only 1.5 hours round trip, but as the sign says, "...sections of this trail are narrow, steep and hazardous...".  I think they were warning Peggy and me that it is not a good idea for us to hike under such conditions.  We are fine on level blacktop park roads.  Hee hee

This is Turkey Path trail.  I walked out to where the path disappears,  the path disappeared almost straight down.

 Time for a quiz- which is not a bear but tastes great?

 We ran into a big bunch of  people (they looked just like us).  We think George V. dropped them off. We talked to some, they are on a four day tour from Maryland.  Their next stop is in Ithaca to see Cornell, gorgeous falls, and other sites in one day and head back home.  Wow.

WELLSBORO, PA

Take a Tour of Wellsboro: Wellsboro, a town of beauty and culture rich in natural resources and the County Seat of Tioga County, might be set down in any section of New England and find itself in familiar surroundings. Founded in 1806 by settlers from Delaware, Maryland and Philadelphia, it was incorporated in 1830.

The town was named in honor of Mary Wells, wife of one of the original settlers, Benjamin Wister Morris (https://wellsboropa.com/)

and is the second oldest tree in USA.

WELLSBORO DINER

 Peggy ate here 15-20 years ago and bragged about the famous Wellsboro Diner.

This is the FAMOUS Roast Beef, Smashed Potatoes and Gravy dinner.  Yum, yum.

CAMPFIRE 

Tuesday, Oct16, the sky was clear so we decided to have a campfire. The campfire was in a pit under a pavilion designed for campfires, i.e. such as a Maple Sugar Shack.The temperature was in the high 40's and with snow pants on and several layers of coats, it was very nice.

" Pennsylvania Grand Canyon ", Wellsboro, PA, October 15-18, 2018

Hello, How are you all?

This blog is about Peggy and Jimmy's last hurrah camping trip for 2018.  Our goal this year was to camp three nights, once a month, starting May, 2018 and ending October, 2018.  We were a little hesitant as October 15th approach, but we laid it all in the Lord's hands and we ended having a great time even during the rain and snow squalls.

Canyon Country Campground, a mile from the rim of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.

The campground is located in a deep wooded area, some on a hillside.  It was wonderful, and quiet.

 

I put the canopy up and read during the rain.

 

 And if you are a rugged hiker you can hike about one mile to the rim of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.

 Peggy and I decided to have hot drinks before we started on our other journey

 The Tower Lookout.When we got to the tower, there is no one around.  Then we saw a turn-style with a credit card access.  For three dollars you can climb the 125 steps up to the top. And 125 steps down.  Peggy was worried that once I went through the turn-style, would I be able to get back out.

The views were absolutely beautiful.

The trip up and back is about like the trail up to brother Don's camp, narrow, rough, and wondering if you ever would make it.  Only kidding Don.

Well, that's all for this edition.  The next post will be our trip to the Leonard Harrison State Park which has a nice overlook of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon with the Pine Creek flowing at the bottom with lots of trout.

Camping at South Shore RV Park, Sotus Point, NY 7/15/2018

Hello, This is Peggy and Jimmy. And Sally

As I started to blog this morning, July 17, 2018, I was sitting on the deck and a rather large bird came into view just a few yards (maybe 30) in front of me.  It is windy today.  The bird, I think it was an eagle, circled and flew into the wind.  It stopped flapping it wings and held them out in a glide pattern.  The wind lifted it straight up for about 30 feet then it flapped its wings and turned a 180 degrees and flew away.  It is an amazing sight sitting here on the deck by our camper. Watching the white caps, the sail boat and fishing boats.   It was hot and muggy the first two days but still very nice in the shade over our deck. Today the weather changed after the storm blew through and with it went the high humidity.  We like to go to church and leave after for parts unknown for two to three nights. We arrived at South Shore RV Park Sunday and will leave Thursday.   We hope you enjoy the post.
